I finally saw 'Sinners' yesterday, and it hit way too close to home. My family is full of church and blues musicians, all rooted in the legacy of sharecroppers from Crenshaw, Mississippi. My great-grandmother—the daughter of sharecroppers—was murdered in Clarksdale, Mississippi (the very setting of the film) on her 26th birthday. Her daughter, my grandmother, and other relatives later moved up north to escape Jim Crow and build a better life. Most of them were musicians and singers. And now here I am—a city kid and church girl from St. Louis—carrying on that legacy, still trying to make it in music in a racist society. Thank you Susie Freeman for moving up North to give us a better life. Now we just need them reparations.
P.s.The spiritual/hoodoo aspects were insane too, but my family is too religious for me to dive into that. Lol.
It was a great Juneteenth seeing Kl@n members get obliterated. 🙌🏾✊🏾
